Overview

A nitrogen-oxygen mixture is a medical gas composed primarily of nitrogen and oxygen in varying proportions. It is commonly referred to as "medical air" when the composition approximates atmospheric air (about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen), but therapeutic mixtures can be adjusted to meet specific clinical needs. The primary mechanism of action involves providing a controlled source of breathable gas for respiratory support, ensuring adequate oxygenation while avoiding hyperoxia or hypoxia. Oxygen from the mixture enters the lungs, diffuses across alveolar membranes into systemic circulation, binds hemoglobin, and supports cellular respiration by acting as the terminal electron acceptor in oxidative phosphorylation within mitochondria[1][4][5]. Nitrogen acts as an inert carrier gas that helps maintain appropriate partial pressures and prevents absorption atelectasis.
