Overview
Nitroglycerin is a small molecule nitrate vasodilator used primarily for the prevention and acute relief of angina pectoris (chest pain) due to coronary artery disease. It acts by relaxing vascular smooth muscle, leading to vasodilation, which reduces cardiac workload and oxygen demand while increasing blood flow to the heart. The drug is also indicated for acute myocardial infarction, severe hypertension, perioperative hypertension, congestive heart failure in the setting of acute myocardial infarction, induction of intraoperative hypotension, and treatment of chronic anal fissures at lower concentrations. Nitroglycerin exerts its effects through conversion to nitric oxide (NO), which activates soluble guanylate cyclase in vascular smooth muscle cells[1][2][3][4][5][7].
