NiCE (Nitroglycerin-Citrate-Ethanol) is a non-antibiotic, antimicrobial catheter lock solution developed by researchers at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Novel Anti-Infective Technologies. It is composed of low-dose nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate), sodium citrate, and ethanol. The formulation is designed to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) by synergistically eradicating biofilms formed by multidrug-resistant bacteria and fungi, such as MRSA, VRE, and Candida auris. Additionally, the sodium citrate component provides anticoagulant properties to maintain catheter patency. It is primarily intended for use in cancer patients with central venous catheters.
