Overview

Nitronezine (MAP04) is a novel nitrone-based small molecule neuroprotective agent developed by Guangzhou Magpie Pharmaceutical for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Chemically derived from tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), nitronezine is designed as a potent dual-functional compound that acts primarily as a free radical scavenger. It targets reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during the ischemic cascade and subsequent reperfusion, which are major contributors to neuronal death and blood-brain barrier disruption. By neutralizing these radicals and reducing oxidative stress, nitronezine aims to minimize infarct volume and improve long-term functional outcomes in patients. The drug is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials as an intravenous therapy administered during the acute phase of stroke.
