Overview

Nitrous oxide + remifentanil is a combination therapy administered during surgical anesthesia to provide analgesia and anesthesia. **Nitrous oxide** is an inhalational anesthetic gas with analgesic properties, acting primarily as a non-competitive antagonist at the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. **Remifentanil** is an ultra-short-acting, potent synthetic opioid analgesic, administered intravenously, and acts as a selective agonist at the mu-type-opioid receptor, leading to sedation, respiratory depression, and profound analgesia. This combination is used to enhance depth of anesthesia, optimize pain management during surgery, and improve monitoring of consciousness via EEG and Bispectral Index (BIS). Nitrous oxide is eliminated rapidly via the lungs, while remifentanil undergoes degradation by tissue esterases, leading to a very short half-life. This drug combination is commonly used in operating rooms for induction and maintenance of anesthesia, particularly in procedures where fast recovery and titratable effects are desirable[1][3][4][6][8].
