NiuBeiXiaoHe

NiuBeiXiaoHe (NBXH) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) compound prescription used primarily for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB). It is an empirical formula composed of six main herbal ingredients, including Fritillaria cirrhosa, Bletilla striata, Houttuynia cordata, Platycodon grandiflorum, Fructus arctii, and glutinous rice. The formulation has demonstrated significant anti-tuberculous effects in both animal models and clinical practice. Mechanistically, NBXH exerts its effects by inhibiting the growth and proliferation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis through multiple pathways—such as modulating immune responses (including upregulation of chemokines like CXCL1-3/5/10 and cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF), enhancing autophagy and NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity, correcting abnormal gene expression induced by TB infection, reducing inflammatory damage in lung tissue, and restoring immune homeostasis. Network pharmacology studies have identified at least 26 active compounds in NBXH linked to 119 potential anti-TB targets across 41 KEGG pathways relevant to TB pathogenesis[1][2][3][4][5].
