Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Niuhuangqingxin Pill (Niuhuang Qingxin Wan) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula composed of approximately 29 ingredients, including Calculus Bovis (cow gallstone), Ginseng, and Scutellaria. It is traditionally used to clear heart-fire, resolve phlegm, and calm the nerves. Modern clinical research, notably led by Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, has expanded its application to include the treatment of depressive disorder, insomnia, and post-stroke cognitive impairment. The formula's mechanism of action is multi-targeted, involving the modulation of GABAergic neurotransmission to provide sedative and anxiolytic effects, the inhibition of calcium channels for antihypertensive activity, and the antagonism of glutamate receptors to provide neuroprotection. It is also indicated for stroke recovery, hypertension, and coronary heart disease, where it helps improve cerebral blood flow and reduce oxidative stress.
