Overview

Nivolumab is a monoclonal antibody and immune checkpoint inhibitor that targets the programmed death-1 (PD-1) receptor on T cells. By blocking PD-1, it prevents tumor cells from evading immune detection, thereby enhancing the body's anti-tumor immune response. Nivolumab is used to treat various cancers, including melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), renal cell carcinoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, head and neck cancer, urothelial carcinoma, colorectal cancer with microsatellite instability-high or mismatch repair deficiency (MSI-H/dMMR), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), esophageal cancer, gastric/gastroesophageal junction cancers, and malignant pleural mesothelioma. It can be administered alone or in combination with other therapies such as ipilimumab or chemotherapy. Chemoradiation refers to the combined use of chemotherapy and radiation therapy as a treatment regimen for certain cancers. The combination of nivolumab with chemoradiation is being investigated in clinical trials for enhanced efficacy in some malignancies.
