Overview

Nizatidine is a small molecule pharmaceutical drug classified as a histamine H2-receptor antagonist (H2 blocker). It works by competitively and reversibly inhibiting the action of histamine at H2 receptors on gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion. Nizatidine is primarily indicated for the treatment of active benign gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, erosive and ulcerative esophagitis (including heartburn or acid indigestion), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It may also be used to prevent stress ulcers or treat other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production. Nizatidine was developed by Eli Lilly and first marketed in 1988. It is considered equipotent to ranitidine but differs structurally by having a thiazole ring instead of a furan ring[1][3][6][7].
