Overview

NK-104-NP is an investigator-initiated nanoparticle formulation of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor pitavastatin (NK-104). Developed by researchers at Kyushu University and supported by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), this formulation utilizes bioabsorbable poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles to facilitate targeted delivery to the pulmonary vasculature. The drug is primarily being evaluated for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), where it aims to reverse vascular remodeling by inhibiting the proliferation of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells and reducing local inflammation. By employing a nanoparticle delivery system, NK-104-NP seeks to achieve high therapeutic concentrations within the lungs while minimizing the systemic exposure and potential side effects associated with high-dose oral statin therapy.
