Overview

NK938 is a liquid embolic agent developed by Nippon Kayaku for the treatment of hypervascular tumors and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). It is designed for intra-arterial administration to achieve permanent vascular occlusion. The agent typically consists of a biocompatible polymer, such as ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer, dissolved in an organic solvent like dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), with tantalum powder added to provide radiopacity for fluoroscopic visualization. Upon injection into the target vasculature, the DMSO solvent dissipates into the blood, causing the EVOH polymer to precipitate in situ and form a solid, sponge-like mass that mechanically occludes the vessel. This mechanism allows for controlled, deep penetration into complex vascular structures, such as the nidus of an AVM or the capillary bed of a hypervascular tumor, effectively cutting off blood supply to the lesion.
