NKL peptides are synthetic antimicrobial peptides derived from NK-lysin, a naturally occurring protein (human homolog is granulysin) found in cytotoxic T lymphocytes and natural killer cells. These peptides are cationic and amphipathic, primarily acting by disrupting bacterial plasma membranes and forming transmembrane pores, which leads to bacterial death. They can also induce genomic DNA degradation in bacteria. NKL peptides exhibit broad-spectrum activity, including antibacterial effects against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, antiviral activity against viruses like Nodavirus and Rotavirus, and antiparasitic effects against parasites such as Eimeria sporozoites. Additionally, they demonstrate cytotoxic activity against cancer cells, inducing apoptosis, and possess immunomodulatory properties, influencing immune responses by upregulating chemokines and cytokines. NKL peptides are being investigated for therapeutic applications in both human and veterinary medicine, particularly in aquaculture for fish and poultry.
