Overview

**NKTR-061** is an inhaled formulation of amikacin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, delivered via Nektar's proprietary pulmonary drug delivery technology for deep lung deposition. Developed by Nektar Therapeutics in collaboration with Bayer HealthCare, it was intended as an adjunctive therapy to systemic antibiotics for treating Gram-negative pneumonias, particularly hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in mechanically ventilated patients. Phase 2 trials showed promising reductions in intravenous antibiotic use and high lung tissue concentrations, but it failed Phase 3 trials by not demonstrating additional benefit over standard care, leading to discontinuation.[1][2][3][4][7][9]
