Overview

NL1 is a small-molecule inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), discovered through a research collaboration led by NYU Langone Health with Gero, Ellyris, and the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology. This compound works by blocking hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production in bacteria, which in turn potentiates the efficacy of existing antibiotics against resistant pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The research, funded by grants from the Blavatnik Family Foundation, the United States Department of Defense, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, was published in Science in June 2021, highlighting its potential to address antibiotic resistance.
