NL2

NL2 is a small-molecule inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE). Discovered through a research collaboration led by NYU Langone Health with Gero, Ellyris, and the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology, NL2 functions by blocking hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production. This mechanism potentiates the effect of existing antibiotics against resistant bacterial pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as demonstrated in mouse infection models. The research was published in Science in June 2021, aiming to address the critical need for new strategies to combat antibiotic resistance.
