Overview

NL3 is a small-molecule inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE). Discovered through a research collaboration led by NYU Langone Health with Gero, Ellyris, and the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology, and funded by grants from the Blavatnik Family Foundation, the United States Department of Defense, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. NL3 functions by blocking hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production, which in turn potentiates the effect of existing antibiotics against resistant bacterial pathogens such as *Staphylococcus aureus* and *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. Its efficacy has been demonstrated in mouse infection models, and the research was published in the journal Science in June 2021, aiming to address the critical need for new strategies to combat antibiotic resistance.
