Overview

NmCV-5 is a pentavalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine designed to protect against five major serogroups of *Neisseria meningitidis* (A, C, W, X, and Y). It is the first vaccine to include protection against serogroup X. The vaccine consists of polysaccharides from these serogroups conjugated to protein carriers—tetanus toxoid for A and X; recombinant cross-reactive material 197 (rCRM197), a non-toxic diphtheria toxin variant, for C, W, and Y. Developed through a collaboration between PATH and Serum Institute of India with support from WHO and the UK government’s Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), NmCV-5 aims to address the limitations of previous monovalent or quadrivalent vaccines by providing broader coverage at an affordable cost for low-resource settings. Clinical trials have demonstrated strong safety profiles and robust immunogenicity in both adults and children. The World Health Organization has recommended its introduction into routine immunization programs in Africa’s “meningitis belt,” where it has potential to eliminate epidemics caused by these predominant strains[1][2][3][4][7].
