NMD-001 is an autologous cell therapy consisting of concentrated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PB-MNCs), currently under clinical investigation in Japan for the treatment of refractory chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). Developed by researchers at Nippon Medical School, the therapy is specifically targeted at high-risk patients, such as those on hemodialysis with Rutherford category 5 foot ulcers who have exhausted standard revascularization options. NMD-001 is administered via multiple intramuscular injections into the ischemic limb. The therapeutic effect is mediated by the paracrine secretion of various angiogenic growth factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), which promote the development of collateral circulation and improve tissue perfusion to facilitate ulcer healing and prevent limb amputation.
