NMJ-2 is a novel small molecule histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, specifically a cinnamyl sulfonamide-hydroxamic acid derivative. It has been investigated for its neuroprotective properties in preclinical models of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. NMJ-2 works by inhibiting HDAC enzymes, which leads to a reduction in oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, the restoration of striatal dopamine levels, and the protection of neuronal cells from amyloid-beta (Aβ)-induced neurodegeneration. In animal models, such as the MPTP-induced rat model of Parkinson's, NMJ-2 has demonstrated the ability to improve locomotor and anxiety-like behaviors.
