Overview

Nobori is a drug-eluting stent (DES) system developed by Terumo Corporation for the treatment of coronary artery disease. It consists of a stainless steel stent platform with an abluminal coating of a biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) polymer that releases Biolimus A9 (also known as umirolimus). Biolimus A9 is a highly lipophilic sirolimus analogue that inhibits smooth muscle cell proliferation by binding to the FK-binding protein-12 (FKBP12) and subsequently inhibiting the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway. This action prevents neointimal hyperplasia, the primary cause of restenosis after stent implantation. The Nobori system is distinguished by its abluminal-only coating, which directs drug delivery toward the vessel wall while minimizing exposure to the circulating blood, and its biodegradable carrier that degrades within 9 to 12 months to potentially improve long-term vascular healing.
