Overview

Non-myeloablative allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an experimental cellular therapy protocol developed by Richard Burt, MD, at Northwestern University for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). The procedure involves a conditioning regimen consisting of cyclophosphamide, fludarabine, and alemtuzumab (CAMPATH-1H) to suppress the patient's existing immune system, which is responsible for destroying the bile ducts. Following conditioning, hematopoietic stem cells from an HLA-matched sibling are infused to reconstitute a healthy immune system that does not attack the liver tissue. This approach aims to stop or reverse disease progression in patients who have failed standard therapies like ursodeoxycholic acid.
