Overview

Noni extract is derived from the fruit and other parts of the Morinda citrifolia plant (commonly known as noni or Indian mulberry), native to Southeast Asia and Polynesia. It is used in various forms including juice and dry extracts. Noni contains a range of bioactive compounds such as iridoids (notably deacetylasperulosidic acid), glycosides, scopoletin, quercetin, damnacanthal, polysaccharides, flavonoids, anthraquinones and vitamins (notably vitamin C). Traditionally used for a wide variety of ailments—such as pain relief (analgesic), inflammation reduction (anti-inflammatory), immune system support (immunostimulant), diabetes management (antidiabetic), hypertension control (hypotensive) and cancer adjunct therapy—noni’s mechanisms are diverse. Laboratory studies suggest that its effects may be due to inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B enzyme for antidiabetic action; selective inhibition of cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1/COX-2 for anti-inflammatory activity; antioxidant effects via increased superoxide dismutase activity; modulation of apoptosis pathways in cancer cells through upregulation/downregulation of p53/Bax/Bcl-2 proteins; stimulation of gastrointestinal motility via 5-HT4 receptor agonism by scopoletin; antidopaminergic/antiadrenergic effects by scopoletin/rutin; hepatoprotective actions through regulation of lipid homeostasis and antioxidative status[4][6][7][8]. Despite traditional use for many conditions—including arthritis pain relief supported by some small clinical trials—robust clinical evidence remains limited[5][8]. The US FDA has issued warnings against unsupported health claims related to noni products[1].
