nonoxynol-9

Nonoxynol-9 is a nonionic surfactant and spermicide used primarily for non-hormonal contraception. It is the active ingredient in many over-the-counter spermicidal creams, gels, foams, films, suppositories, and lubricants. Nonoxynol-9 acts by disrupting the lipid membranes of sperm cells—specifically lysing the acrosomal membrane and damaging other organelles—leading to immobilization and death of sperm. This mechanism prevents fertilization during intercourse. Nonoxynol-9 has been widely used for more than 30 years as a locally acting contraceptive agent in conjunction with barrier methods such as condoms or diaphragms[1][3][5][6]. It does not elicit systemic effects when used vaginally.
