Nordiazepam (also known as nordazepam) is a long-acting 1,4-benzodiazepine derivative that functions as a partial agonist at the GABA-A receptor. It is primarily utilized for its anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, sedative, and muscle relaxant properties, specifically in the management of anxiety disorders. A defining characteristic of nordiazepam is its role as a major active metabolite for several widely used benzodiazepines, such as diazepam, chlordiazepoxide, and clorazepate. Due to its extremely long elimination half-life, which ranges from 36 to 200 hours, it can accumulate in the body with repeated dosing. Compared to other benzodiazepines, it is reported to have lower potency regarding amnesic and muscle-relaxing effects.
