Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xulane is a transdermal contraceptive patch containing a combination of the progestin norelgestromin and the estrogen ethinyl estradiol. It was the first generic version of the Ortho Evra patch to receive FDA approval and is currently marketed by Viatris (formerly Mylan). The patch is designed for once-weekly application over a three-week cycle, followed by a patch-free week to allow for withdrawal bleeding. Its primary mechanism of action involves the suppression of gonadotropins, which inhibits ovulation. Secondary contraceptive effects include increasing the viscosity of cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Xulane is specifically indicated for women with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 30 kg/m², as its efficacy may be diminished in women with higher body weights.
