Overview

Norephedrine is a psychoactive small molecule that acts as an indirect sympathomimetic, primarily by inducing the release of noradrenaline, which leads to increased cardiac contractility and heart rate. It is an amphetamine analogue and a natural constituent of the khat plant (Catha edulis) and Ephedra herba. Norephedrine is also a metabolite of methamphetamine and serves as a pharmaceutical intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs like ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. It has been identified as a critical active ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine (Yangke powder) for alleviating allergic asthma, where it modulates the PI3K/AKT/NF-κB pathway.
