Overview

Norepinephrine + ascorbic acid is a combination of two agents, norepinephrine (a potent vasopressor and neurotransmitter) and ascorbic acid (vitamin C, an essential antioxidant and enzymatic cofactor). This combination is not a standard fixed-dose pharmaceutical product but has been studied in clinical settings—particularly in critical care—for its potential synergistic effects. Ascorbic acid acts as a cofactor for dopamine β-hydroxylase, the enzyme that converts dopamine to norepinephrine, thereby enhancing endogenous synthesis of norepinephrine[1][2][5]. In conditions such as septic shock, where both vitamin C levels and catecholamine responsiveness may be depleted or impaired, high-dose intravenous vitamin C has been shown to increase plasma norepinephrine levels and reduce the need for exogenous vasopressors[3]. The mechanism involves both direct support of catecholamine biosynthesis via enzymatic cofactors and antioxidant protection against oxidative stress[1][2][5].
