Overview

Norethandrolone is a synthetic androgen and anabolic steroid (AAS) medication, structurally related to nandrolone. It acts as an agonist of the androgen receptor, promoting muscle growth and exhibiting strong anabolic effects relative to its androgenic effects. Norethandrolone also has significant progestogenic activity. Historically, it was used for treating muscle wasting, severe burns, trauma recovery, and certain forms of aplastic anemia. The drug was first introduced in 1956 after being discovered in 1953 and became notable as the first marketed AAS with a favorable separation between anabolic and androgenic effects. Most countries have discontinued its use due to concerns about hepatotoxicity; however, it remains available in some regions such as France[1][7]. Side effects include virilization symptoms (acne, increased hair growth), estrogenic effects (fluid retention, gynecomastia), liver toxicity with long-term use or high doses[1][5]. Norethandrolone is classified as a controlled substance in many jurisdictions.
