Overview

Norethindrone is a synthetic oral progestin (progestogen) used primarily for contraception (as a "mini-pill" or progestin-only pill), treatment of endometriosis, secondary amenorrhea (absence of menstrual periods in women who have previously menstruated), and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance. It works by binding to progesterone receptors and exerting effects similar to endogenous progesterone but with higher potency. Its mechanisms include suppression of ovulation in some users by inhibiting pituitary gonadotropins (luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)), thickening cervical mucus to inhibit sperm penetration, slowing ovum transport through the fallopian tubes, and altering the endometrial lining to prevent implantation. Norethindrone is also used as part of hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms[1][2][3][5][6].
