Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Norethindrone + ethinyl estradiol is a combination oral contraceptive containing two synthetic hormones: norethindrone (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). It is primarily used to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, altering cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration, and changing the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation[2][3][5]. In some formulations, it may also be used for hormone replacement therapy in menopausal women to treat symptoms such as hot flashes and prevent osteoporosis[4][8]. The drug is available under numerous brand names and dosage forms.
