Overview
Balziva is a monophasic combination oral contraceptive (COC) containing 0.4 mg of the progestin norethindrone and 0.035 mg of the estrogen ethinylestradiol. It is primarily indicated for the prevention of pregnancy, achieving its effect by suppressing the secretion of gonadotropins (LH and FSH) from the pituitary gland, which in turn inhibits ovulation. Additionally, Balziva induces changes in the cervical mucus to increase its viscosity and impede sperm migration, while also modifying the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of blastocyst implantation. Beyond contraception, it is frequently prescribed for the management of acne, endometriosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
