Overview
norethindrone acetate + ethinyl estradiol + ferrous fumarate is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) formulation. It contains norethindrone acetate (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (a synthetic estrogen), often packaged with ferrous fumarate (iron) tablets to be taken during the hormone-free interval to maintain the daily dosing habit and provide iron supplementation. While its primary indication is the prevention of pregnancy, researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center have investigated its use in female athletes to protect against anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. The hypothesized mechanism for this protective effect is the stabilization of hormonal fluctuations—specifically relaxin—which can increase joint laxity and injury risk during certain phases of the menstrual cycle.
