Overview

Norethindrone acetate transdermal delivery system (TDS) is an investigational progestin-only contraceptive patch developed by Watson Pharmaceuticals. The active ingredient, norethindrone acetate (NETA), is a synthetic progestin that acts as a potent agonist of the progesterone receptor. By providing a continuous release of the hormone through the skin, the system aims to prevent pregnancy primarily by suppressing ovulation, increasing the viscosity of cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration, and altering the endometrial lining to discourage implantation. This formulation was evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials, such as the 'Simplify' study, as a convenient alternative to daily oral contraceptive pills. While Watson Pharmaceuticals marketed oral progestin-only contraceptives like NOR-QD, this specific transdermal system was designed to offer the benefits of a patch-based delivery for contraception.
