Norfloxacin is a synthetic, broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used primarily to treat bacterial infections of the urinary tract, prostate, and certain sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea. It acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV—enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination in bacteria. This inhibition leads to disruption of bacterial cell division and ultimately results in bactericidal activity. Norfloxacin is more selective for bacterial enzymes than mammalian ones and accumulates in the urine, making it especially effective for urinary tract infections. Due to potential serious adverse effects (such as tendinitis or tendon rupture), its use is generally reserved for cases where alternative treatments are not suitable[1][3][4][5][7].
