Overview

Norfagyl is a fixed-dose combination antibiotic product marketed by Celsius Healthcare, primarily used for the treatment of gastrointestinal infections. It contains **norfloxacin**, a second-generation fluoroquinolone, and **metronidazole**, a nitroimidazole derivative. Norfloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for DNA replication, transcription, and repair in a broad spectrum of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria. Metronidazole is a prodrug that is reduced in anaerobic environments to form reactive intermediates that cause DNA strand breakage in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. This combination is particularly effective for treating mixed infections such as amoebic dysentery, bacillary dysentery, and infectious diarrhea caused by susceptible organisms like *Entamoeba histolytica* and *Giardia lamblia*.
