Norflurane (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) is a colorless gas with a slight ethereal odor that is commercially available as a liquid in pressurized cylinders or cans. It is primarily used as a propellant in metered dose inhalers (MDIs) for delivering medications such as salbutamol and salmeterol. Norflurane has also been investigated for use as an inhalational anesthetic agent in animal studies and has been studied clinically as a vapocoolant spray for numbing small boils before incision and drainage. Its mechanism of action does not involve direct pharmacological activity on human targets; rather, it acts physically to deliver drugs or provide local cooling/anaesthesia. Norflurane is rapidly absorbed after inhalation and mainly eliminated by exhalation without significant metabolism[2][3][6][7].
