Norfri is an enzymatic therapeutic candidate developed by researchers at Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) for the management of fructose malabsorption. The active ingredient is xylose isomerase, an enzyme that catalyzes the reversible isomerization of D-fructose into D-glucose within the small intestine. In individuals with fructose malabsorption, the impaired absorption of fructose leads to its accumulation in the colon, where it undergoes bacterial fermentation, resulting in gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, flatulence, and abdominal pain. By converting fructose into the more readily absorbed glucose before it reaches the large intestine, Norfri aims to reduce the load of fermentable carbohydrates and alleviate associated distress. It is designed for oral administration as a digestive aid to be taken prior to meals containing fructose.
