Overview
Norgestimate + ethinyl estradiol is a combination oral contraceptive containing two hormones: norgestimate (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen). It is primarily used to prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, altering cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration, and changing the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Additionally, it is approved for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in females at least 15 years old who have started menstruating and desire contraception. The drug does not protect against HIV or other sexually transmitted infections. Norgestimate acts as an agonist of the progesterone receptor, while ethinyl estradiol acts as an agonist of the estrogen receptor[1][2][3][4][5][8].
