norgestrel

Norgestrel is a synthetic progestin (progestogen) used primarily as an oral contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. It acts mainly by inhibiting ovulation and altering cervical mucus to reduce sperm penetration, thereby preventing fertilization[1][2][4][5]. Norgestrel is available both as a progestin-only pill (Opill, Ovrette) and in combination with estrogens such as ethinylestradiol (as in the combined oral contraceptive brand Ovral)[1][5]. It may also be used in menopausal hormone therapy[5]. Norgestrel is taken orally and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Its mechanism of action involves agonism of the progesterone receptor. The drug was patented in 1961 and introduced for medical use in 1966[5].
