Overview

This is a combination of normal saline (sterile 0.9% sodium chloride solution) and salbutamol (also known as albuterol), typically used for inhalation via nebulizer in the management of acute or severe bronchospasm, especially in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Salbutamol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that relaxes airway smooth muscle, leading to bronchodilation. Normal saline serves as the diluent to achieve an appropriate nebulization volume for effective delivery of salbutamol to the lungs. This combination is commonly prepared immediately before administration by mixing a specified dose of salbutamol with enough normal saline to reach a total volume suitable for nebulization, usually 3–5 mL[6][8]. The mixture provides rapid relief from bronchospasm and is reserved primarily for severe cases or when metered-dose inhalers are not effective or feasible.
