Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Normosol is a brand of balanced isotonic crystalloid solutions, primarily Normosol-R, used for intravenous fluid and electrolyte replenishment. It is designed to closely match the electrolyte composition of human plasma, containing sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride. Unlike 0.9% normal saline, which can lead to hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, Normosol contains acetate and gluconate. These components serve as physiological buffers that are metabolized into bicarbonate, helping to maintain acid-base homeostasis. It is widely used in clinical settings for perioperative fluid management, volume resuscitation in critically ill patients, and as a vehicle for medication administration.
