Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Normosol-R** is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic balanced crystalloid solution for intravenous fluid and electrolyte replacement. It contains sodium chloride, sodium acetate anhydrous, sodium gluconate, potassium chloride, and magnesium chloride. The product replaces extracellular fluid and provides sodium, potassium, magnesium, chloride, acetate, and gluconate ions; acetate is metabolized to bicarbonate equivalents and contributes an alkalinizing effect. It is used for acute extracellular-fluid losses associated with surgery, trauma, burns, or shock and as an adjunct for restoration of circulating volume in moderate blood loss. The current U.S. label identifies ICU Medical as the manufacturer and lists an osmolarity of approximately 295 mOsmol/L.
