Overview

Normosol-R and 5% Dextrose is a sterile, nonpyrogenic isotonic solution for intravenous administration, serving as a parenteral fluid, electrolyte, and nutrient replenisher. It contains a combination of magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, dextrose monohydrate, sodium gluconate, sodium chloride, and sodium acetate anhydrous. The solution is designed to provide water and essential electrolytes in a composition that approximates the principal ions of normal plasma, while the 5% dextrose component provides carbohydrate calories. It is indicated for the replacement of acute extracellular fluid losses and the maintenance of fluid and electrolyte balance in patients where oral intake is insufficient or contraindicated. The acetate and gluconate components act as bicarbonate precursors to help maintain acid-base balance.
