Overview

Norovirus GI.1 Norwalk virus inoculum is a purified infectious stock of the human norovirus genogroup I genotype 1 (GI.1), commonly referred to as the "Norwalk" strain[1][4][5]. It is used primarily in controlled human infection models (CHIM) to study norovirus pathogenesis, immune responses, and to evaluate vaccine efficacy[1][2][5]. The most referenced lot for research purposes is Lot 001-09NV, which has been shown to be stable and infectious over a decade of storage[1]. This standardized viral challenge material enables consistent comparison across studies and supports the development of vaccines against acute gastroenteritis caused by noroviruses[4][5]. The mechanism of action involves direct infection of gastrointestinal epithelial cells leading to self-limited gastroenteritis; it does not act as a therapeutic or preventive drug but rather as an experimental tool for inducing disease in clinical trials.
