North American Coral Snake Antivenin (Equine) is a horse-derived immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody preparation indicated for the treatment of envenomation caused by bites from North American coral snakes, specifically Micrurus fulvius fulvius (Eastern Coral Snake) and Micrurus fulvius tenere (Texas Coral Snake). The antivenom is produced by immunizing healthy horses with coral snake venom and then fractionating their blood to obtain serum globulins. It is supplied as a sterile lyophilized powder for intravenous administration after reconstitution. The mechanism of action involves specific binding and neutralization of coral snake venom toxins, thereby preventing or reversing neurotoxic effects such as lower motor neuron paralysis. This product has been shown to decrease intubation rates and ventilator time in patients with confirmed envenomation[1][2][5][6].
