Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Nortriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) used primarily to treat depression. It works by inhibiting the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin in adrenergic and serotonergic neurons, thereby increasing the levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain and helping to restore mental balance. Nortriptyline is also prescribed off-label for conditions such as neuropathic pain (including post-herpetic neuralgia), panic disorders, and as an aid for smoking cessation. The drug is available in oral capsule and liquid forms[1][2][4][5][6][8].
