Overview
Norwalk virus, also known as Norovirus, is a non-enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Caliciviridae family. It is the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, characterized by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In clinical research, Norwalk virus can be utilized as an intervention, often as a "Norwalk virus solution," to induce experimental human infection. This controlled infection serves to evaluate the efficacy of vaccines or other interventions designed to prevent or treat viral acute gastroenteritis.
