Overview
Nourishing kidney and activating blood (Bushen Huoxue) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapeutic principle and the name of a specific granule formulation developed by Longhua Hospital, affiliated with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The formulation is primarily investigated for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), formerly known as primary biliary cirrhosis. It is a combination of two classic TCM formulas: Shixiao powder (Shi Xiao San), which is traditionally used to resolve blood stasis and alleviate pain, and Erzhi Pill (Er Zhi Wan), which is used to tonify the liver and kidney yin. In clinical trial contexts, such as ChiCTR1900026813, this granule is evaluated as an adjunctive therapy to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) to assess its efficacy in improving biochemical markers, reducing liver fibrosis, and enhancing patient survival in PBC patients.
