Overview

Nova-EPO is a recombinant fusion protein consisting of an erythropoietin (EPO) polypeptide fused to a mutated Fc fragment of human IgG. Developed by Genoxa, it is designed as an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) for the treatment of anemia. The drug acts as an agonist for the erythropoietin receptor (EPOR), mimicking the action of endogenous erythropoietin to stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, thereby increasing red blood cell production. The incorporation of a mutated Fc fragment is intended to extend the protein's circulating half-life through neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn)-mediated recycling, potentially allowing for a more convenient dosing schedule compared to first-generation recombinant human erythropoietins. Nova-EPO is currently in the preclinical stage of development.
