Overview
Novabac is a topical antibacterial skin wash containing 5% tea tree oil (TTO), derived from the plant *Melaleuca alternifolia*, as its active ingredient. Developed by researchers at the Belfast Health & Social Care Trust, it is designed for the prevention of methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA) colonization in critically ill adults within intensive care units (ICUs). The mechanism of action involves the disruption of the bacterial cell membrane and the inhibition of microbial respiration, providing a natural alternative to standard antiseptic washes. Clinical evaluation includes a randomized controlled trial (ISRCTN65190967) comparing its efficacy against standard care for reducing MRSA acquisition.
